Real Women- Real Experiences- 20.2.19- Unwanted Pregnancy In Unmarried Female & 2nd Trimester Abortion by Inducing Mini Labor
A 26 years old unmarried, working woman, resident of Kandivali, came for consultation for history of irregular and delayed menses. She is engaged to be married and was looking for regularization of menses.She was sexually active .
As a part of protocol of first line investigation of missed periods , we did urine pregnancy test (UPT) & it came out positive.
She showed surprise at this finding as she has been menstruating albeit irregularly.
An obstetrics ultrasound was performed and it revealed pregnancy of 15-16 weeks duration.
Now, at this gestation age , abortion tablets are out of question.
Even a procedure of D & E ( Dilatation and Evacuation ) also popularly known as D&C can not be performed as a method of termination of pregnancy.
Only thing remaining is induction of mini labor that is legal and safe process of second trimester (Duration of Pregnancy Between 12-20 Weeks of Gestation ) MTP ( Medical Termination of Pregnancy )
As this is a normal pregnancy , obviously uterus is in no mood to go in labor yet.
We have excellent Uterotonic ( making uterus contract to expel pregnancy ) drugs, and we made use of them.
It took a day of medications, lots of IV and oral medication and fetus got expelled.
After a day of delay , under Short General Anesthesia ( SGA) a CC-check curettage was also performed to remove adherent pieces of placenta.
She was discharged from the hospital uneventfully.
The impact on physical health , mental health , emotional health, financial health has been tremendous..
Simple use of regular contraception like daily oral contraceptive pill (OCP) or regular use of condoms would have prevented so many of heartache and tremendous amount of pain
